Two strokes have been legislated almost out of existence because they are virtually impossible to get through emissions regs. The problem is that they use a form of lubrication for the engine that uses a constant flow of fresh oil, which is then blown out of the exhaust. Apart from that, they make superb motorcycle engines. They are light, simple, powerful and reliable and have been for decades. The bikes that the soapster describes sound like they have been too heavily tuned to be much fun on the road. When a highly tuned stroker hits the powerband it is like having a turbo kick in with a bit of nitrous assistance too. There is no reason though that they cannot be tuned for torque. The old Suzuki GT500 was made like that and was an excellent and flexible bike for its day. Most modern trials bikes are 2 strokes and they literally have enough torque to climb vertical surfaces from a standing start. If manufacturers could get past the emissions issue, there are plenty of potential buyers out there for a modern 2 stroke. This concept picture of a new RD350 generated a huge amount of internet gossip. Who wouldn't want this?
